Involves manipulation of soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments), joint movement therapy, active and passive stretches.
This is a therapy which can be a little painful at times mainly due to congested area and adhesions, after the first couple of treatment it become less painful as your body adapts to pressure and the problem areas now improved.
Most people find deep tissue massage quite addictive and don't want to go back to the lighter massage.
Can help to achieve physical and psychological fitness, maximize muscular potential and speed recovery.
Deep tissue massage :
Improve circulation, muscle balance, posture, eliminate pain
muscle that are in spasm are painful to touch because of lack of blood flow (ischemia), lack of blood flow also means lack of oxygen which can cause production of lactic acid which means muscle soreness.
After massage the muscles will be more relaxed, blood rush through the fibres bringing oxygen and allowing lactic acid to dissipate getting rid of pain.
Tecniques used in Deep tissue massage might include:
Massage with the use of the Therapist Elbow
Deep tissue frictions
Muscle aligment
Muscle manipulation
Myofascial Trigger Point therapy
Pressure point therapy or Acupressure
The massage therapist may ask you to be with your lye face down, up or on the side or on a sited position to get into some very deep muscle fibres.
Note:
If you like to get a relaxing deep tissue massage (which is possible believe it or not) then make sure you ask the therapist background as if the therapist is also qualified in holistic massage they are likely to combine the two therapies, if the therapist has not holistic background but a sport background then it is unlikely he/she can do that as they wouldn' t have the necessary training .
