We are looking for Volunteers Holistic Therapist

Hello everybody,

We're a residential service helping people addicted to drugs to stabilize on methadone in Dublin city and we're in need of volunteer holistic therapists.

Our service- the Peter McVerry Stabilization Service- is a residential service helping people to stabilize on methadone. We run day programmes- which are fairly therapeutic in the morning- and which focus on life-skills and relaxation in the afternoon. Once participants have proven their determination to stabilize on drugs by giving an opiate-free urine, they are allowed to move into the house, which is homely and warm and houses up to seven people (men and women).

In the evenings, we have various holistic therapists who volunteer and who help residents relax. These volunteers are hugely appreciated and vital to our service.

Once in the house, it's amazing to see the difference in the residents. Within a week or two, they look so much healthier and the transition in their demeanor and general outlook is actually a privilege to see.

The reason we made our service residential was because at the end of the day programme, participants used to have to go back to drug-filled hostels or live in places which are associated with their drug use. Obviously, this seriously hampered their attempts to stabilize their drug use.

Most of the residents hope to go on to completely detox off methadone, but others simply wish to stabilize on their methadone.

As part of their evening activities, we are hoping to recruit more holistic therapists, as the therapists we currently have have been with us for a while now and we now need new volunteers.

Generally, the holistic therapy runs from 7.30-9.30pm any day during the week. Our only stipulation is that our volunteers are able to commit to a 12-week period, as it takes time for a relationship to be built up with residents.

At the moment, we only have volunteers on weekday evenings, but perhaps we might make a therapy available at another time, should a practitioner be willing to work then.
