Bursae are small fluid filled sacs, they act as cushions between structure in the body.
Their job is to reduce frictions and distribute stress, they are found around joint between the bone and the tendon, or tendon and tendon but they can also be tendon connective tissue.
If a tendon is very tight it can cause the bursae to irritate and inflame, it is difficult to diagnose and to distinguish from other soft tissue injuries and are most likely to occur together.
A bursae injury can be diagnosed by x-ray or scan.
Massage can help in the early stages or mild conditions, deep friction to the adjacent tendon and rest from the offending activity should help, active and passive stretching should be prescribed to lengthen the tight tendon, for chronic and severe Bursitis anti-inflammatory medication may be needed and in some serious cases cortico-steroid injection.
