Following a rapture or partial rapture of an Achille’s tendon the Physician may advise Achille’s tendon repair surgery.
There two types of surgery to repair an Achille’s tendon:
• In open surgery, the surgeon makes a single large incision in the back of the leg.
• In percutaneous surgery, the surgeon makes several small incisions rather than one large incision.
Usually the surgeon will wait about a week until the swelling has gone down.
After surgery, the client will likely wear a cast or walking boot for 6 to 12 weeks. The cast or boot is positioned to keep the foot pointed downward as the tendon heals. The cast or boot is then adjusted gradually to bring the foot back ot it’s normal position ( neutral, not pointing up or down).
Movement and some weight bearing exercises should be recommend early, before the cast or boot comes off. Total recovery time will probably be as long as 6 months, the fittest the client the quickest the recovery, a non athletic person may take much longer to recover fully
