Sport injuries assessment
Few simple points
History:
How and when the injury occurred
(very important to know as many details as possible).
Inflammation:
Heat and redness indicate high concentration of blood , it’s a necessary step of healing but it need to be stopped , avoid working directly on the area , ice is the answer.
Swelling:
Location of swelling can give strong hints on the type of structure injured, it need to be contained , compression will help .
- Occurring immediately after injury indicates some bleeding.
- Visible lumps could indicate ruptured fibres -
- Swelling of a muscle could also hide a burst vein or vessel .
- Damage to ligaments will involve some swelling –
Bleeding:
Torn tissue ( inter-muscular or inter-arterial ). Blood pooling or Haematoma can cause excessive scar tissue and calcification , good drainage is necessary to avoid any problems .
Pain:
Tissue damage - severity of pain could give an indication of the gravity or type of the injury ( E.G twinge, ache, trobbing, burning…).the client need to be pain free before resuming full activity .
Movement :
- Pain during active movement might indicate a muscular or tendon strain
- Pain at end of range of movement could indicate a sprained ligament
- Pain during weight bearing or impact activities could indicate bone or cartilage damage.
The above scenarios need to be carefully assessed , some injuries will show similar symptoms to others , the therapist need to perform specific tests before treatment and may have to refer the client to a Doctor or Specialist, or in some cases straight to Hospital.
