A muscle strain occurs when a muscle is stretched beyond its capability.
The capability of a muscle to stretch beyond a certain point depends upon few factors:
Adequate warm up before an event, game or competition.
The person or athlete own natural flexibility.
Muscle or Structural imbalance.
Weather condition and Dehydration.
Muscle fatigue or Overuse
And others….
There are different way to quantify a strain, as in for ligament sprains we give a grade to describe the gravity of the injury, for example:
Grade 1: minor injury, few muscle fibers are overstretched ( microscopic level), the return to normal activities will be estimated from 1 week to 10 days depending the person own fitness.
Grade 2 : serious injury, some muscle fibers are torn, return to normal activities estimated around 3-4 weeks.
Grade 3 : almost complete or complete rupture, may need surgery.
